CERTIFICATION PROCEDURES & REQUIREMENTS
Succesful completion of either (A) a national certification examination or (B) an on dossier process confers the status of certified member. ATIS certified translators and interpreters are members by affiliation of the Canadian Translators, Terminologists and Interpreters Council (CTTIC). The status of certified member is portable among all CTTIC member bodies.
Associate translators who pass the ATIS admission exam have five years (possibility of two one year extensions) from the date they become associate members to successfully complete the certification process, either by writing the national certification exam or through the on-dossier process.
Associate members who do not obtain certification within the prescribed period must rewrite and pass the ATIS admission exam in order to remain eligible for membership.
To apply for certification, associate members must have either o a degree in translation and one year of work experience; o or, if they do not have a degree in translation, four year of work experience. For official languages (French and English) one year of experience is equivalent to 110,000 words.
For other languages, one year of experience is equivalent to 30,000 words.
Exam date
The national certification exam will take place on Saturday, February 25, 2012, in Saskatoon and Regina. Deadline for registration is November 15, 2011.
